Embracing Changes

Dr Marcus Lo
Editor-in-Chief, HKSEMS
Emergency medicine stands at the frontline of hospital care, constantly responding to shifts in medical, social, and environmental demands. From individual patients to global crises, our specialty is defined by adaptability, resilience, and innovation.
In Hong Kong, the emergency medicine community has continually evolved to meet new challenges, whether managing infectious outbreaks, refining trauma care, or integrating emerging technologies. As aspects of our society change and patient expectations rise, we must adapt quickly by improving workflows, enhancing training, and advocating for system-wide change.
This issue highlights two initiatives reflecting our field’s dynamic nature. Dr. Stephen Yeung introduces the new trauma course that emphasizes a team-based approach, focusing on seamless collaboration among emergency physicians, surgeons, anesthetists and nurses. Dr. Kam Chak Wah examines gastric tube placement confirmation in A&E, and his proposal underscores the importance of continuously updating our protocols to enhance patient safety and efficiency.
Emergency medicine is a dynamic field. We encourage all members of the emergency medicine community to share their insights and innovations. By working together, we ensure that our specialty remains responsive, prepared, and ready for whatever challenges come next.
